Girls Under Trees was painted shortly before Macke's death. Like Franz Marc, Macke was called to serve in World War I and was killed on September 26 1914 - shortly after that senseless war began.
The scene seems quite idyllic, but what of the girl in the center? There seems to be a sense of melancholy about her; she appears younger than the other girls and separate from them.
