Another work from the Historical Portraits gallery in London. This is a more conventional portrait than Reynolds' depiction of Jupiter (see thumbnail at left), but it's striking in its own way.
No doubt it was carefully planned out by the artist, but the overall effect is extremely light and spontaneous. What brings it all together is her huge mass of red hair, which mirrors her dress. Together they create a sort of frame around her, highlighting her face and shoulders.
