Jean-Baptiste Greuze was one of the great artists of the Rococo period. The most famous works from this period -- by Greuze, Fragonard, Watteau, Boucher and others -- depict the upper classes at play, and astonish with their artifice and superficiality. But at the same time these painters were capable of producing individual portraits of genuine beauty and depth.
In this painting (which the Met's website speculates may have been merely a study for a larger work), the lighting, the brushwork and the naturalness of the moment are superb.
