The National Gallery of Art website ably explains how to read the painting. By focusing on the ducks at their moment of their probable death, Homer brings an undeniable sadness to it. Nonetheless I find it slightly amusing that the hunter is effectively shooting directly at the painter - or at the viewer, if you will.
