Persepolis, founded by Darius the first, was the capital of the Achaemenid Empire. His palace was extensively decorated with strange sculptures of wild beasts and unfamiliar deities. One of the great cities of the world in its day, it was eventually conquered, looted and burned by Alexander the Great.
