This is part history painting, part journalism, part celebration of a one-sided victory of the Dutch fleet over the Spanish. One can imagine that a painting of the scene would be handled very differently if the Dutch had lost the battle. As it is, this image of the moment of destruction of the Spanish flagship and its crew seems to be rendered with pride, even glee.
