I visited the Rijksmuseum with my family earlier this year, and this portrait was an unexpected favorite from our visit.
Usually the Rijksmuseum website has sumptuous reproductions of the paintings in their collection, but I'd only give this scan about a 9 out of 10. The detail is not quite perfect, and there's a trompe l'oeil feel to the actual painting that doesn't come across in the online version.
P.S. Your first reaction might be the same as mine: that the painting is of a future bridegroom. But according to the Rijksmuseum's website, it's much more likely that the sitter was a goldsmith and the ring was a symbol of his profession.
