The Brooklyn Museum provided us with an excellent scan to be used in conjunction with the exhibition Great Expectations: John Singer Sargent Painting Children, which is underway and runs through January 16 2005; my only criticism would be that it's better than any of the scans on their own website.
This superb portrait is somewhat unfinished, yet it is far from a mere sketch. Sargent typically painted portraits on a flat background or one that was merely roughed in. A notable exception that comes to mind is his great masterpiece Carnation, Lily, Lily, Rose, but that's really more of a figurative painting than a portrait.
