Saint Jerome lived for years in the desert, repenting from his sins, before eventually becoming one of the church's great scholars.
These attributes made him a popular symbol during the Counter-Reformation, a period that stressed the virtues of conservatism and ascetism and self-mastery. He was therefore a popular subject for artists at this time - Caravaggio painted him at least three times.
In terms of artistic representation, the figure of the aged, cerebral Saint Jerome allows Caravaggio to make a clean break from the dynamism and heroism of the Mannerist style.
