Henri Rousseau was a remarkable self-taught painter with a vivacious imagination. Jungles, and jungle cats in particular, appear again and again in his paintings despite the fact that he had never travelled abroad.

He had the unusual habit of starting a painting at the top of the canvas and carefully working his way down.
