While he did do the occasional figurative work (i.e. a painting of a person), Charles Sheeler is primarily known for his sleek machine age landscapes of the 1920s and 1930s.

This "self-portrait" is a witty acknowledgement that he has more interest in observing technology than the human form, even his own.
