May, 1999: Spotlight on Women in the Arts

This month we look at the contributions of women to fine art. Needless to say, there is a wide variety of great art to choose from, so I tried to tried to mirror this diversity in my choices for artist, exhibit, book, print and museum for the month. There should be something for everyone here.

And if you can't find what you're looking for on this page, I have pulled a couple of hundred female artists from our database (out of more than 500 in all), and listed them all on a separate page. This list could keep you busy for months.

The featured artist for May is Georgia O'Keeffe, an immensely popular artist (#6 on April's Top 30 list), who has also enjoyed a great deal of critical success, largely for the modernist and abstract influences in her work. Click here for over 30 museum sites and image archives where O'Keeffe's work can be viewed online.

The featured museum site is the National Museum of Women in the Arts, which is in Washington D.C. Click here for a brief review of their site and to access their home page.

The featured online exhibit is the Please Change Beliefs, a World Wide Web-based installation by the well-known conceptual artist Jenny Holzer. Click here for a brief review of the exhibit and to visit it.

The featured book is Cindy Sherman: Retrospective, a look at the career of one of the most interesting, and most controversial photographers working today. Warning: one excited Amazon reviewer felt that Sherman's later work is "without a doubt deranged" and "repulsing to even the most open-minded of audiences."

The featured print is Frida Kahlo's magical, enigmatic, disturbing, dream-like Self-Portrait with Monkeys [No longer available].
