Matisse: Radical Invention, 1913–1917
Museum of Modern Art (MoMA), New York City
July 18 – October 11, 2010
New York is America's hotspot for big art shows, and its Museum of Modern Art is on fire. In 2009, MoMA remarkably played host to the 7 most popular U.S. art exhibitions (as measured by average daily attendance). This show looks at 130 works from a pivotal but poorly understood period of Matisse's life.
"Between Henri Matisse's return from Morocco in 1913 and his departure for Nice in 1917, the artist produced some of the most demanding, experimental, and enigmatic works of his career... the exhibition reveals deep connections among these works and demonstrates their critical role in the artist's development at this time."
