Hannah Höch
[German Dadaist Painter, 1889-1978]
|
I can remember often going out with [Kurt Schwitters] on sketching expeditions in the country, for instance, near Hannover along the banks of a canal. Of course, we never exhibited these works, which were like the five-finger exercise of a concert pianist who refrains from playing such things in public. But this is an aspect of Dada art which is never mentioned today. However subversive our aesthetic doctrines, we still believed in acquiring, by training, the traditional skills of an artist.
