This is another excellent photograph provided by the Phillips Collection in Washington D.C., to accompany this summer's East Meets West exhibition.
Burchfield was a landscape painter who had a spiritual, almost pantheistic, connection to nature. The trees here are brought to life by a kind of vibration or aura that recalls van Gogh's landscapes decades before, and anticipates Keith Haring's vibrant graffiti decades later.
